Litigation Paralegal
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Litigation Paralegal – Full-time position to change the world for millions of families who have a child with special needs/disabilities (perfect for law student or recent law school graduate)
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff and Senior Paralegal for a non-profit civil rights advocacy and law firm, the Litigation Paralegal enhances the Management Team’s effectiveness by providing support across many difficult and complex areas having significant financial, procedural or policy consequences for the growing organization. The non-profit advocates for special needs children and their families across multiple legal and financial matters. The Litigation Paralegal will be involved in one of the largest class action lawsuits for special education in the nation (see www.ReOpenClass.com for details).
Reports to: Senior Paralegal
Location: New York City, New York (full-time, in-person)
Key Relationships: The Litigation Paralegal works closely with the Management Team and administrative staff as well as interaction with Board Members, parents, donors, doctors, educators, therapists, media and the special needs community at-large.
Responsibilities
- Conserves Management Team’s time by reading, researching, reviewing, verifying, and routing correspondence, reports and legal documents; drafting letters and documents; collecting and analyzing information; initiating telecommunications; organizing conferences, meetings and events; scheduling couriers, court reporters, expert witnesses, and other special functions; coordinating preparation of charts, graphs, and other visuals for presentations; preparing expense reports
- Produces information by transcribing, formatting, inputting, editing, retrieving, copying, and transmitting text, data, and graphics; coordinating case preparation.
- Assists the finance and operations regarding reimbursements, preparing invoices, and tracking payments.
- Maintains client confidence by keeping information confidential.
- Provides historical reference by developing and utilizing filing and retrieving systems; recording meeting discussions; maintaining transcripts; documenting and maintaining evidence.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Act as a liaison with federal, state and local governments to assist in overall mission.
- Will provide legal project management and guidance relating to a variety of issues ranging from medical, educational and research-related areas to non-profit company operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher (could be current law school student).
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible clerical and legal experience including documentation skills, meeting planning, office experience and PC proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (Spanish-speaking is an advantage).
- Keen observation and excellent time management skills.
- Efficient legal writing, reading, editing skills.
- Experience working with or sensitivity to individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision.
- MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR
Salary: Competitive (range: $50,000 – 75,000 depending on experience) + benefits (Dental insurance, Health insurance and Paid time off)
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm (full-time, in-person)
